M.D. of Northern Lights

Economic Development

Historically a haven for the fur trade, homesteading and mixed farming operations, County of Northern Lights has evolved into specialized farming; in the 1960’s ventured into oil and gas explorations; and in the 1990’s into forestry.

Land
Grey-wooded soil and reasonably flat land has lent itself well to agriculture. County of Northern Lights currently operates about five gravel pits, most of which are located along the Peace River valley.

Forests
The abundance of white poplar/aspen in northern Alta. is attractive to forest industry with harvesting taking place in Keg River, Chinchaga, Sulphur Lake and Hawk Hills areas.

Big Game
Historically known as moose and goose country the Dixonville area of the County is a haven for big game hunting. Guides and outfitters operating in the Chinchaga River and Carcajou areas also offer wilderness tours. Sunny Valley Lodge [22km east of North Star] constructed in 1992 offers big game hunting and wilderness tours. Wild elk and woodland caribou are also found in the area.

Water
Bordered on the east by the mighty Peace, other rivers of significance flowing through the County are: the Notikewin, Meikle, Hotchkiss and Whitemud, plus portions of the Chinchaga and Keg rivers. Several Lakes dot the MD, each having its own special use - Leddy Lake (recreational); Figure 8 Lake (stocked fishing, canoeing, beach area); Long Lake (water ski training facility); Murdoch Lake (a semi annual refuge for migratory birds and home to an exotic bird farm); and Twin Lakes (stocked for fishing by canoe or electric motor boats). A portion of the Grimshaw Gravels Aquifer rests within MD boundaries and is monitored by an Advisory Committee. A portion of the Grimshaw Gravels Aquifer http://welcome.to/grimshawaquifer rests within MD boundaries and is monitored by an Advisory Committee of which the County is a participating municipality.

Oil & Gas
The Chinchaga River and Ring Creek areas are locations of major oil and gas production. Several gas processing plants of varying sizes are located in the region.
