The Countyof Northern Lights Council has set its priority to improving the existing road

network, as compared to building new roads.  Every year Council selects roads which have been

performing poorly or require reshaping and rebuilds approximately ten (10) to fifteen (15) kilometers of road

using a combination of in-house crews and commenced equipment.

Council has also been improving the existing roads through the designing and tendering of the more

expensive and complex roads.  These projects usually have grant funding and must be completed to

Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation specification.  The current project the County of

Northern Lights is working towards is the improving of accesses off Highway 35, north of Manning.

The County of Northern Lights  has also completed a lot of work on its bridge program.

Much of the bridge work is funded by Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation through their GAP Funding

program.  All bridges are inspected on at least a five (5) year cycle with bridges in poorer condition

  inspected more often.

Dust Control

The municipality will annually advertise that it is taking applications for dust control. Applications must be completed by the applicant and any necessary payment must be received by the MD prior to any work commencing.  Applications will not be accepted after the close of business on April 30th of the application year.  Dust control agents shall be applied for a length of 200 meters upon approval of the Director of Public Works in the following areas: dirt roads near school zones and/or playgrounds, major intersections, major roadways through declared hamlets, roads along and into community water supplies and roads into community halls.  The primary dust control agent used by the municipality is calcium chloride. Applications for Dust Control are available on-line. Applicants requesting dust control on Secondary Highways will be directed to the Alberta Transportation.

Road Bans

The County believes in protecting the municipal road network within the County from damage caused by heavy traffic during seasonal conditions.  They propose to accomplish this by imposing road bans and by publicly advising road users of such bans.  All overload trucks require permits which can be obtained from Roadata at 1-888-830-7623.  Check out the Quick Links-Road Bans on the Home page.

Snowplowing

The municipality shall try to achieve good winter driving conditions on main gravel surfaces within 72 hours of last snowfall.  Lesser-travelled roads will be plowed in a timely manner. Snowplowing priority is as follows: 1) school bus routes and occupied residents, 2) flagged driveways, community halls and transfer stations then 3) *field access roads (*request must be submitted to area Lead Hands).

Private driveways may be snowplowed as the public roads are being plowed if it is operationally effective.  Prior to any work taking place on private land, the applicant MUST sign an County snowplowing agreement and comply with the conditions of the snowplowing policy. Snowplow flags can be purchase at a cost of $30.00 regular and $10.00 for seniors at the following locations: UFA-Grimshaw, UFA-Peace River, School Daze Confectionary-Deadwood, Millenium Cabins-Keg River, Dixonville Store and the County of Northern Lights  Office.  The flag will be picked up by the grader operator and returned to the Lead Hand or County office.

Rural Road Signage

Now that we have road signs, do you know how to use them?  Our province is divided into range and townships, each township being 36 sections or 6 miles square.  Range roads run north – south and township roads run east – west. Each section of land is also identified by section number – township – range and meridian.  Using this, a particular road can be identifies, say range road 245 being 5 miles west of the 24th range and township road 844 being 4 miles north of the 84th township line.  So if someone says they live on range road 233 1 ½ miles north of 840 on the right hand side of road, by following the road signs you should be able to find them.  It is important to know where you live in case of an emergency, by giving your land location, crews can easily find the road and your place.
